In short, the Blue Flag program is like a shortcut that allows you to make eco-friendly, sustainable choices.

More specifically, the Blue Flag program is a joint program between several Costa Rican organizations, among them the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), CANATUR (National Tourism Chamber), MINAE (Ministry of Environment), the Ministry of Public Health, and the National Water Service – in other words, entities dedicated to travel, health, and related topics.

Wherever you fall on the pendulum – and, chances are, you’re likely somewhere in between the two extremes – this time of year offers a much-needed break from the winter blues and the lengthy first quarter on the corporate calendar (or the second semester for younger members of the family). It’s worth noting that in the past, alcohol sales were traditionally prohibited from midnight on Holy Wednesday through Good Friday. However, this regulation has since undergone some updating, with municipalities now having autonomy over alcohol sales during this period. In popular beach areas like Tamarindo, alcohol is readily available, even during these holy days.

Gift-wrapped in plantain leaves, Costa Rica’s spin on the renowned tamal features seasoned corn flour, a medley of veggies, and a generous serving of pulled pork – all tied together with a festive bow! Traditionally, the centerpiece of a Costa Rican Christmas dinner is a succulent piece of pierna de cerdo asada: roasted pork, cooked to absolute melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Alternatively, for those who’d dine out, pierna de cerdo is readily available in many typical restaurants during this festive season.

Take a Ride

For a holiday thrill in Costa Rica, know that the country often celebrates with seasonal turnos, similar to county fairs.

While the renowned “big rides” are usually found in Zapote, a district of San José, keep your eyes peeled for local town parks transformed into holiday fairs. Delight in Twinkle Lights

Buy a Lottery Ticket

Feeling lucky? In Costa Rica, the grand annual jackpot, known as “el Gordo” (the Big One), is drawn just before Christmas (this year: December 17, 2023). Purchasing a Gordoticket is believed to bring luck (if not riches) in the new year.

Between December 25 and January 1, Costa Rica kicks into full holiday mode. While Christmas is more traditionally a family holiday, the week following is often seen as a time for visiting the beach, enjoying time off with friends, and ringing the new year in with style.

Nothing embodies the Costa Rican spirit quite like a sizzling barbecue feast on New Year’s Eve. Costa Rica ushers in New Year’s Eve with two distinct approaches – and both are entirely acceptable and enjoyable. Here, the holiday is synonymous with fun, so feel free to choose your preferred style!

The newest way to celebrate New Year’s Eve is with a lively party, customized to whatever you love most. For many Costa Ricans, this means a larger, more festive version of the traditional gathering – amplified with an abundance of music, ice-cold beers, and (legal) fireworks.

You can also avail yourself of New Year’s Eve parties, which are very popular here at the beach. While once rare, they are now more accessible, so if you’re keen on going out for NYE, there’s always a venue and a way. (Feel free to ask us; we’re awaiting the announcement of all local events!)

Fireworks play a central role in Costa Rica’s New Year’s Eve revelry, and if you ask us, it’s a spectacle to behold!

Traditionally, Costa Ricans purchased their own fireworks – the smaller, safer (arguably), do-it-yourself variety available at roadside stands and ignited in backyard celebrations. Today, these fireworks remain highly popular – although less so than before – and have evolved in complexity; some backyards showcase impressive professional displays!

For an absolute guarantee of a breathtaking fireworks show, many commercial establishments and public spaces organize their own displays. And here at the beach, some of the finest shows take place right on the beach. Stake out a spot before midnight, sink your toes into the sand, and marvel as fire dancers come to life and fireworks illuminate the sky. It’s magical!

Adopt a New Tradition

Latin America, including Costa Rica, boasts numerous New Year’s customs and traditions, each laden with hopes for luck, happiness, financial prosperity, and joy in the coming year. Here are a few cherished favorites:

• 12 Grapes: Some Costa Ricans indulge in 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, symbolizing 12 wishes and prosperity for each month of the upcoming year. Grapes, often imported and considered a holiday delicacy, add a sweet touch to the celebration.
• Santa Lucía Flower: Many Costa Ricans tuck a Santa Lucía flower (often dried) into their wallets on January 1 – a talisman believed to bring financial success throughout the year.
• Coordinate Your Underwear: Surprisingly, an old wives’ tale in Costa Rica links the color of your underwear on NYE to the fortunes of the new year. Opt for red to kindle romance, choose green for financial success, and don yellow for an infusion of overall good luck!

And there you have it – you’re now primed to say ¡Feliz año nuevo!, pronounced (more or less) like feh-leez ahn-yo new-ay-voh, it translates to “Happy New Year!” If writing it down, be sure to include the ñ in año, as omitting it could result in a somewhat cheeky (albeit humorous) phrase!

Costa Rica luxury resorts do very well with luxury amenities, offering everything from resort pools and golf courses to onsite spas and restaurants.

The thing is, the country’s luxury villas can match all those amenities – and then some. If you’re interested in resort amenities, then choose a home within a resort community. For example, our Hacienda Pinilla vacation rentals grant you access to the resort’s full list of amenities, from a championship golf course and tennis courts to an onsite Beach Club, restaurants, and hiking and biking trails.

And then, private villa rentals are just that: private. Comparison: Interiors, Privacy & Comfort

This might be a given, but hotel rooms cannot compare to the privacy, comfort, and spaciousness of a private villa rental. And we know – it’s all relative. But objectively, even the best Costa Rica luxury resorts and luxury hotels in Guanacaste, Costa Rica are, by definition, shared spaces with shared amenities among all guests.

Whereas the average luxury hotel room measures 650 square feet – and splash-out suites usually top out around the 1,000 square-foot range – our spacious luxury villas range from 1,600 square feet (for a 2-bedroom condo) to 13,000+ square feet (for a 6+ bedroom estate).

Beyond the benefit of space to spread out and actually live, a luxury vacation home affords additional comforts, warmth, and convenience, with the just-like-home (in a good way) amenities you don’t want to vacation without, like an always-available washer/dryer and squishy sofas, private bathrooms for everyone and TVs far enough from the kids’ or in-laws’ rooms that you can catch up on your favorite shows at night.

And then, there’s the luxury of knowing you’re covered when it’s raining outside or you simply want to relax for a day. Enjoy your private pool. Watch a movie together in your private cinema. And enjoy the privacy. Because you simply won’t get that at luxury hotels in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Comparison: Meals & Dining

There are three kinds of travelers out there: 1) The ones who love eating out for every meal on vacation; 2) The ones who love eating out for special meals on vacation; and 3) The ones who prefer to eat in, whenever possible.

Both resorts and luxury hotels in Guanacaste, Costa Rica offer excellent dining and restaurant options for that first kind of traveler (although private homes do, too; see below!), with many offering free daily breakfast and the best offering one (or more) onsite restaurants. That said, the second and third types of travelers will encounter challenges, as most rooms and suites don’t offer kitchenette or full kitchen facilities.

By contrast, even the most modest vacation rentals offer a full kitchen and luxury homes add on chef-read, gourmet kitchens so you can meal-prep, whether you simply want to brew a fresh pot of coffee in the morning and are planning to grill up your catch-of-the-day.
